Side Ancient Theatre
Highlights
Stand in the center of this massive Roman amphitheater and marvel at the incredible architecture that once held 15,000 spectators.
A Grand Stage of History
The Side Ancient Theatre is a massive Roman-style theater built in the 2nd century AD, once capable of holding up to 15,000 spectators. Unlike most ancient theaters that are built into hillsides, this one is a free-standing structure supported by massive stone arches, showcasing the incredible engineering of the Roman era. It was used for everything from classical plays to gladiatorial combats and even public executions. Standing in the center of the arena and looking up at the towering seating rows, you can feel the absolute scale and acoustic power of this ancient giant.
What Makes It Special
- Unique Architecture: One of the few theaters built on flat ground using a massive arched support system.
- Historical Atmosphere: The stage building is still partially preserved, showing the intricate decorations of the past.
- Cultural Hub: Occasionally hosts classical music concerts during the summer months, bringing history to life.
